WASTE CHARACTERIZATION

In June 2006, the GTZ-AHT Solid Waste Management for LGUs and the Local Government of Buenavista jointly conducted a waste characterization (WACs) in the municipality. Two WACs has been done: one on wastes from the public markets and another on household wastes. The table below shows a comparison between the 2 waste sources of 3 general categories of wastes. The diagrams show in detail the differentiations in waste volume of sub-categories of waste.

Types of Wastes

Market Waste

Household waste

Biodegradable

72.24

71.98

Non-biodegradable

1.10

4.93

Residual

26.67

23.09

The table above shows that similarities in the amount and proportion of wastes generated in the 2 sources. That there are more non-biodegradable wastes generated in the households than in the markets may be attributed to lack of information among household members on the types of non-biodegradable materials that may be re-used or recycled. Junk shop operators collect most of the recyclable wastes from the markets.
